There are group classes called Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons, and private hands-on Functional Integration® lessons. In both formats, you learn better body mechanics, discover your movement potential, and improve your comfort. As you let go of unnecessary muscular effort, you move more in accordance with the design of your skeleton, and enjoy the freedom of effort-less movement that comes with more efficient body mechanics. A regular Awareness Through Movement practice leads to a reduction of strain and tension throughout your whole body and results in increased strength, grace and well-being. This learning is applied to improve all of life’s daily activities, as well as athletic and artistic skills.
These classes consist of slow and mindful movement sequences done on a padded surface on the floor, from the comfort of your own home. This approach lends itself well to an online format because you don’t need to watch or copy a teacher. Rather, you listen to gentle instructions and cues as you explore your own comfortable range of movement. Some lessons involve simple movements while others are more complex and challenging. Whether simple or complex, it’s important to stay within a comfortable range of movement, without strain or pain. but are always done in the range of movement you can do comfortably and without strain.
There are countless reasons and benefits, and these are our favorites:
- Meditation and mindfulness: A means to practice mindfulness through gentle movement explorations that deepen awareness of your body and breath.
- Pleasure: Movement lessons that interest your brain, open new neural pathways and bring about pleasurable sensations.
- Reduce stress, tension, and pain: The movement sequences and guided attention allow you to release habitual and even unconscious habits of muscular tension that do not serve you.
Freedom of movement: Each lesson helps you discover new flexibility, grace, and alignment which carries through to all of your daily activities (including work, play, sitting, standing, and walking with ease).
Traditionally, Awareness Through Movement is a verbally guided movement experience. It is often compared to solving a movement puzzle rather than an exercise. Whether the lessons take place live or on a recording, the instructions are careful, clear, and cogent so that anyone can follow along. When taught by experienced teachers the audio-only lessons can be deeply relaxing and places the student into an optimal state of being for learning. The teacher does not demonstrate the movements and students are not expected to watch and imitate the teacher. Rather, students listen to the verbal cues and explore their own internal movement patterns. This offers a different type of somatic experiential learning from the inside-out rather than trying to follow a “perfect” model in a video. This approach improves the interoceptive and proprioceptive systems that help you develop skillful movement throughout your daily life. That said, as a reference for unusual positions and unfamiliar movements, some lessons may contain pictures and/or short videos to provide enhanced clarity of the verbal directions.
Most Awareness Through Movement lessons available online require a web browser or need to be downloaded. This is an app you can access directly on your phone or tablet. The Easy Movement App is the first app dedicated to Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons. This app provides convenience and ease of operation, 24/7 access, and the ability to access lessons without cumbersome downloads and digital storage space on your own device. You can repeat any of the lessons as often as you like. Also the Easy Movement App adds new content monthly. The app also includes a community space where you can interact with Seth Paris, ask questions, and even make requests for new content on topics of your own personal interest.
